What is Elementor?

Launched in 2016, Elementor is a third-party page builder plugin for WordPress, designed to offer extensive flexibility and customization through a no-code interface. Unlike Gutenberg, which is integrated into WordPress core, Elementor must be installed and managed as a separate plugin.

Popular among users looking for highly visual, drag-and-drop page building, Elementor delivers a broad feature set that empowers end users to create complex layouts and designs without developer involvement.

However, while Elementor expands design possibilities, careful attention to performance and scalability is critical — especially for enterprise-grade WordPress implementations. At rtCamp, we work with Elementor implementations as well, helping enterprises use it effectively at scale. This typically requires additional engineering to optimize performance, maintain accessibility standards, and ensure long-term maintainability.

Pre-built website kits

Elementor offers over 100 designer-made templates, covering full websites, individual pages, sections, headers, and landing pages. These templates accelerate project delivery but require a premium plan for access.

Widgets library

Elementor comes with a rich widget library, including widgets for sliders, carousels, Google Maps embeds, forms, and WooCommerce product data, among others.

Theme builder

Elementor’s Theme Builder gives teams the power to visually design and control every part of a WordPress site, from headers and footers to archives and dynamic templates. And all of this without needing to write code. It brings a full-site editing experience directly inside Elementor, helping teams move faster while maintaining brand consistency.

Motion effects

Elementor also offers advanced motion and animation effects for creating dynamic, interactive page experiences. These effects can enhance engagement when used thoughtfully (but may impact performance if overused).

Device-specific editing

Elementor provides granular control over responsive design, allowing users to create device-specific versions of a page directly within the interface, a critical feature for modern, mobile-first development.

Extensibility through third-party add-ons

The Elementor ecosystem also includes hundreds of third-party add-ons that extend functionality, from advanced form builders to custom WooCommerce layouts. However, vetting and managing these extensions is key to maintaining performance and security at scale.

Elementor empowers WordPress users with unmatched design flexibility, especially for building visually rich, highly customized websites without heavy development effort upfront. However, this flexibility comes with trade-offs, particularly in performance, scalability, and accessibility, that need to be actively managed for enterprise-grade implementations.

At rtCamp, we work with Elementor when it aligns with client needs, applying our engineering standards to ensure that performance optimization, accessibility, and maintainability are never compromised. Whether it’s scaling Elementor across a multisite network, integrating it into complex content workflows, or optimizing Core Web Vitals for large audiences, we help enterprises get the best out of Elementor, without the risks typically associated with third-party page builders.
