Q 1. What kinds of media does it support?

As of now, BuddyPress media supports audio, video and images in the following formats:

  • Images: JPEG, PNG and GIF
  • Audio: MP3 only
  • Videos: Only MP4 (H.264Codec support)

Q 3. How come, there are only a few file formats supported?

It only makes sense to support formats that have the widest cross-browser and cross-platform support. Refer these Wikipedia entries on browser support for video and browser suport for audio. The only way to work with other formats is to convert them to these standard formats. For eg, by using BuddyPress-Media FFMPEG Add-on and BuddyPress-Media Kaltura Add-on.

Q 4. The plugin doesn’t seem to work after installing. Why so?

The recent release supports WordPress version 3.5 or above and BuddyPress version 1.6 and above. We would request you to update your WordPress and Plugins to ensure smooth functioning. If problem still persists, you may ask your questions on our Support Forum.

Q 5. Why can’t I upload videos when music and photos are uploading fine?

This is most probably due to an incorrect setting, if you are on a multisite install. Please check this helpful thread in the support forum. If this doesn’t help, check if you are able to upload videos from the WordPress dashboard. If you still can’t upload videos, contact us on the Support Forum.

Q 6. My activity uploader seems to be broken, what do I do?

Activity uploader is a theme dependant functionality. Check if it works with a standard WordPress theme like twenty-twelve. If it does, kindly drop the existing theme for a standard one. Else, contact the theme developer(s) for an update.

Q 7. Why can’t I upload multiple images on an iPhone?

This is a bug with iOS. when uploading multiple images (only images, video and audio work fine), iOS for some reason renames all the images exactly as image.jpg for the uploader. So, the uploader feels they are duplicates and only uploads one image.

Q 8. My site is broken, the media pages look weird, what do I do?

Since, BuddyPress Media is a core component of BuddyPress, it depends on members/single/plugins.php and groups/single/plugins.php files in your BuddyPress theme. In the past, hardly any popular components existed and hence, these files are usually neglected and ignored by theme developers. Confirm this by activating any standard WordPress theme (like, twenty-twelve). If it works fine, contact your theme developer for an update. If not, contact us on the  Support Forum.

Q 9. Why is the lightbox not working properly?

The lightbox is a theme dependant functionality and relies on error free jQuery from the theme. If there are errors with the lightbox, kindly contact your theme developer. The lightbox is not responsive, as of 2.10. Work on this is in progress.

Q 10. How do I embed external media (like, from YouTube)?

The current version (2.10) doesn’t have support for embedding videos, as yet. This is on our roadmap and will be added soon.

Place a request on the Support Forum and we’ll add it to our translation project.

Q 14. I need a new feature, what should I do?

Check the existing feature requests and our roadmap. If the feature you need doesn’t exist, let us know in the support forum.

Please remember that all feature requests may not align with the current flow or vision for the plugin. If you need something very urgently and it is already in our roadmap, consider sponsoring it. If it is not there, consider hiring us.
